Siemens Energy has signed a deal with China Power International, a unit of renewables giant State Power Investment Corp (SPIC), to provide a green hydrogen production system on a megawatt scale for a H2 fuelling station near Beijing.

The energy subsidiary of German industrial conglomerate Siemens said the electrolyser (to split water into H2 using renewable power) will guarantee the H2 supply for the public transportation during and after a major sports event in 2022 in Yanquing District, Beijing.

Siemens Energy told Recharge the unit will be able to produce at least 200 Nm³ per hour, which means it can produce enough green hydrogen to fuel 4-5 hydrogen-driven passenger cars per hour.

“The decarbonisation of the energy systems is a challenge that every country must face. Siemens Energy is the company that can provide its customers with significant support in this process – no matter if they are states or companies,” Siemens Energy chief executive Christian Bruch said.

“Promoting the application and development of renewable hydrogen is of great significance for China to build a modern and cleaner energy system.

“Together with our partner SPIC, we are making an important contribution to tackling climate change and reducing carbon emissions.”

The two companies plan to further expand their cooperation on green hydrogen, Siemens Energy said.

The Germans in 2018 had signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in green hydrogen development and comprehensive utilisation with SPIC, which is the ultimate controlling shareholder of China Power.

Siemens Energy after a restructuring this year bundles all energy-related activities of Siemens, including transmission (also from offshore wind farms), generation (gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, hydrogen solutions), and industrial applications for oil and gas. It also owns two thirds in German-Spanish wind turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa.
