The International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) has named Italian government official Francesco La Camera as its next director general.

La Camera is currently director general for sustainable development, energy and climate at the Italian Ministry of Environment. He led the EU and Italian negotiating teams at the COP20 climate talks in Lima and headed the Italian delegations at three other COP sessions, Irena said in a statement announcing his appointment.

La Camera – also a former professor at the University of Rome – will take up the new post on 4 April, succeeding Adnan Amin, the current director general who is stepping down when his current term ends after eight years in the job.
