The international energy industry is “divided” on the impact Covid-19 will have on the global shift from fossil fuels to renewables, according to a new report from the World Energy Council (WEC), with almost half of those polled by the sector body in a membership survey expecting an acceleration of the transition, but the remainder of the belief progress will be slowed by the aftershocks of the pandemic.

The WEC’s latest soundings of its 3,000-plus member organisations, which took in over 220 responses in over 50 countries, found 44% were “optimistic of an acceleration” of the energy transition as the world emerges from under the first wave of coronavirus, with 30% foreseeing the greening of the world’s energy system being “delayed” and 19% expecting it will be “derailed”.
