Germany’s coal commission is mulling a phase-out of coal and lignite-based generation in the country by 2035-38, the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper says citing people close to the body, as thousands of coal workers protested against too fast an exit from the polluting technology.

The commission comprised of politicians, environmentalists and labour representatives was set up by the government of Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier this year with a remit to work out a plan by year-end to phase out coal and lignite in a socially acceptable way.
