The €40bn ($44bn) deal between RWE and E.ON that’s due to create a new global renewable energy powerhouse has been challenged at the European Court of Justice (ECJ) by a group of eleven German utility companies.

The group of smaller regional energy players claim the complex merger and asset-swap arrangement between the two utility giants carves up the market and stifles competition in Germany.
