The European Commission, Parliament and Council have reached a late-night compromise to include a binding EU-wide renewable energy target of 32% by 2030 in its new regulatory framework, with with an upwards revision clause by 2023.

The new target, which measures final energy consumption, is up from the 27% originally proposed, but less ambitious than a 35% target demanded by the renewables sector and backed by more progressive nations such as Spain or Italy.
