The energy transition is unstoppable, driven by low-cost renewables, digitalisation and cheaper electric vehicles (EVs), according to Dolf Gielen, the head of the International Renewable Energy Agency’s (Irena) Innovation and Technology Centre.

“The problem is if we don’t manage that process, we’re going to run into problems,” he tells Recharge.

To deal with the rapid growth of variable renewables, there will need to be increased flexibility in the energy system.
