German utility E.ON and compatriot automaker Audi are planning to build what will be Europe’s largest roof-top PV array – stretched over two logistics centres of its car plant in Győr, Hungary.
Construction on the 12MW installation, which will cover an area of some 160,000 square meters, will start in August, with first generation slated for the beginning of next year.
Annual output from the installation on the Audi Hungaria factory, which E.ON will build and operate, will be over than 9.5GWh, equal to the yearly energy consumption of 5,000 households.
“We are committed to the economical use of resources and therefore want to keep the environmental impact of our production as low as possible. Approximately 70% of Audi Hungaria’s heat requirements are already covered by climate-neutral, geothermal energy,” stated Achim Heinfling, chairman of the board of management of Audi Hungaria.
Peter Kössler, Audi AG’s board of management member for production and logistics, added: “By 2030, we want all our production sites to be climate neutral. The use of renewable energies is an important lever for this.”
