Companies around Europe signed a record-setting 1.5GW of power purchase agreements (PPA) for the supply of wind energy last year, taking the total regional volume to-date toward 5GW, according to new figures from industry advocacy body WindEurope.

Following five years dominated by ICT sector giants including Google, Apple and Microsoft buying wind power to run their data-centres, 2018 saw energy-intensive industries led by the aluminium sector becoming most active, with Norsk Hydro and Alcoa spearheading over 2.2GW of PPAs.
