Shell, Siemens and transmission system operator TenneT have proposed the coupling of an accelerated expansion of offshore wind in Germany to the generation of hydrogen via power-to-gas technology.

The three companies in a joint statement point to a study by consultancy E-Bridge produced on their behalf on how hydrogen could penetrate the market through offshore wind tenders.

An additional 900MW in offshore wind capacity could be tendered off in Germany that is coupled to hydrogen production and would be built from 2026 to 2030, the study finds.
