China is building a first-of-its-kind high-voltage direct current (HVDC) grid system for a wind-solar hybrid demonstration project at Zhangbei, a city 250km from the capital Beijing and co-host of the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Developed by State Grid Corp of China (SGCC), the unique project is based on voltage source converter (VSC) HVDC, an advanced electricity transmission technology designed to boost grid reliability for large-scale renewable power consumption.
