Renewables tenders may have to be held on a regional basis within EU nations in the future to ensure that wind and solar projects are built where the transmission lines will be, according to the secretary-general of Entso-E, the European network of transmission system operators.

Laurent Schmitt told Recharge on the sidelines of the European Utility Week conference in Vienna on Tuesday that transmission lines typically take five to ten years to build from conception to completion, whereas wind farms take three to five years.
