Australia has launched the country’s biggest trial project to produce hydrogen from wind and solar power, with plans unveiled by gas pipeline owner Jemena to build a 500kW electrolyser in western Sydney.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (Arena) has committed A$7.5m ($5.5m) – around half the A$15m total funding for the two-year trial.

Most of the hydrogen produced will be injected into the local system for domestic use and will go towards demonstrating the potential for renewable hydrogen storage in Australia’s gas networks.
