Nicolas Hulot, minister for ecological transition, surprised France by resigning during a radio interview in which he lamented his inability to meaningfully help the environment or convince the country to phase-out nuclear power.

Hulot – before informing French President Emmanuel Macron or Prime Minister Edouard Philippe – told France Inter in a morning interview that he took the decision to quit the government as he doesn’t want to lie to himself anymore, and has “no influence” and “no power” to go beyond small steps in important policy decisions.
