Scott Pruitt, who spearheaded President Donald Trump’s efforts to dismantle his predecessor’s clean energy and climate policies, resigned Thursday as head of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) amid a swirl of allegations over ethics, close ties with lobbyists and wasteful spending of taxpayer money.

In a Twitter message, Trump wrote he had accepted the resignation of the embattled Pruitt as EPA administrator and that Andrew Wheeler, Pruitt’s deputy, would become acting administrator on Monday.
