France’s Saft, the battery-maker owned by French energy giant Total, is leading an alliance of European industrial groups launching an ambitious R&D programme to commercialise GWh-scale high-density Li-ion and solid-state batteries.

The programme, being partnered by Belgian polymer and electrolyte solutions specialist Solvay, German power technology giant Siemens, compatriot battery cell outfit Manz, and a number of other “materials and systems integration” companies, is targeting markets including electro-mobility – EV, railway, marine and aviation – and energy storage.
