Environmental groups such as Greenpeace had complained about a compromise pushed through by the Greens in the failed conservative-liberal-green coalition to switch off “only” 7GW in coal and lignite-fired generation capacity in Germany as a first step towards a coal exit.
They, like many in the Green Party, were pushing for a more radical approach and a faster Energiewende – but Europe’s biggest economy may now get a slower one instead.
