The Danish government has formally approved investment in the 1.4GW UK-Denmark Viking Link interconnector, expected to aid pan-European flow of renewable energy in the next decade.

The decision provides Danish TSO Energinet.dk with about DKr11bn ($1.7bn) to invest in both onshore and offshore development of the high voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnector, alongside network upgrades over the Denmark-German border.

Viking Link, which is being jointly developed by Energinet and its UK counterpart National Grid, will establish a 770km interconnector between Bicker Fen in Lincolnshire, eastern England, and Revsing in southern Jutland, Denmark.
