Digitalisation is central to the global energy transition. Moving to a digital world will improve efficiency in everything from wind turbine performance to workforce management, and enable the coming smart-grid world of distributed solar and storage, electric cars, smart appliances, demand response, virtual power plants and peer-to-peer markets — ultimately reducing the need for physical grid expansion.

“This transformation is so deep and so profound that we’re still only beginning to grasp it,” says Kristian Ruby, secretary-general of European electricity industry body Eurelectric.
