President Donald Trump announced Thursday that the US will pull out of the Paris climate accord, though he chose to take the milder of the two options available to him by initiating a multi-year withdrawal process.
By taking that option, Trump has ensured greater prominence for climate and energy as issues in the 2018 midterm and 2020 presidential elections. The Trump administration was also known to be have considering the more dramatic option of exiting the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change altogether.
