Winning bids for wind projects in Alberta’s first renewables tender this year will likely come in below C$65 ($48) per MWh, as the western Canadian province looks to avoid mistakes made by Ontario’s stalled renewables programme.

With the levelised cost of wind power estimated around C$65/MWh in Alberta, winning bids in the first tender round this year can be expected to come in “a little bit sub-$65”, says Brian Vaasjo, chief executive of Edmonton-based Capital Power, a major power generator in the province.
