Vattenfall and Pelamis Wave Power, the Edinburgh-based technology developer, have launched a joint-venture called Aegir Wave Power to develop the first wave power project off the Shetland Islands.
“The ocean west of Shetland has very close to ideal conditions that will enable us to extract energy from the waves effectively,” says Ulf Tisell, manager of Vattenfall’s ocean energy programme.
Pelamis has developed 150-180 metre long floating "tubes" that move with the waves, allowing generators between the different sections to transform the movement into electricity.
