A digitalised, robot-led wind turbine blade lay-up process that could cut a significant slice out of the cost of fabricating colossal next generation designs has landed Siemens Gamesa an intelligent manufacturing prize from Microsoft.

The German-Spanish OEM’s winning Optical Blade concept links together cameras set above the moulds with an edge-computing system via an “optical detection platform”, creating a human-machine interface that allows workers real-time feedback to catch errors and improve process efficiency.
