The landfill, which serves major Pacific Northwest cities, already features a wind farm and gas-to-energy facility capturing methane from decomposing waste.
The plant will run solid waste through Plasma Enhanced Melter technology developed by Bend, Oregon-based InEnTec. The process involves feeding waste material into progressively hotter closed chambers, where it is superheated to more than 10,000 degrees Celsius with electrically conducting gas (plasma).
