The company says a formal planning application for the £8.4m ($11.9m) project at Aberthaw power station in south Wales will be submitted “soon”, and construction will begin later this year.
The announcement was made by Kevin Akhurst, RWE npower’s managing director for generation, speaking at the McCloskey UK Coal conference.
RWE npower has committed itself to reducing its carbon intensity in the UK by a third from 2000 to 2015, though that does not necessarily mean its overall carbon footprint will be any smaller.
