Some of the biggest names in global chemicals aim to swap fossil fuels for renewable power in a first ever bid to decarbonise one of their industry’s most energy-intensive challenges – the ultra-high temperatures needed for steam cracker furnaces.

BASF, SABIC and Linde will advance methods to tap renewable electricity to achieve the 850 degrees Celsius needed in the steam crackers, which are widely used in chemical production to break down hydrocarbons into olefins and aromatics, said a statement from the trio.
