A few kilometres inland from the southeastern shore of the Middle East Gulf, a large, steel-rimmed disc loaded with a chequerboard of breeze blocks and cables turns languidly in the dry desert heat.
This object may look otherworldly, but it is the prototype of an innovative concept called the Solar Island that one day might well find a place in the landscape of industrial-scale power generation.
