The company acknowledged the presence of the lab in Sunnyvale, California – unlisted on its map of worldwide locations – to both Reuters and, previously, the blog GUNTHER Portfolio, which appears to have first uncovered the news in early March.
First Solar has not, however, confirmed that it is researching copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) technology.
In a story Thursday, Reuters cites three unnamed industry sources saying the company is in fact researching the technology, though it’s unclear what stage the company’s efforts are at, or to what end it is working.
