Commercial-scale wave power could be flowing from a “significant” number of sites around the UK by 2024, following the signing of an ambitious strategic collaboration agreement between technology pioneer CorPower Ocean and developer Simply Blue Energy.

The deal inked by the pair, based around a ‘point absorber’ type device developed by CorPower that captures energy from the rise and fall of waves using a buoy tethered to the seabed with a tensioned mooring system, will also explore developing hybrid floating wind and wave energy farms to increase output from offshore sites “by dovetailing the variations in resource availability”.
