US solar employment up 6.8%, installations on pace to double

The US solar industry added more than 6,700 new jobs in the last year, outpacing the sluggish economy as a whole and providing a much-needed counterpoint to the Solyndra scandal.

US PV installations in the second quarter hit 314MW, up 69% from a year earlier and on pace to reach 1.75GW in 2011 – doubling 2010 installations, according to GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association.

The Solar Foundation has released its 2011 jobs report, which counts 100,237 people working in the US solar industry in August, up 6.8% in the last year compared to a 0.7%
