Tribal lands comprise 2% of the country’s surface area but 5% of all renewable energy resources, according to the US Department of Energy. There is potential to install a staggering 6.7 terawatts of renewable electricity generation capacity on that territory – six times the total US energy capacity.
The new rule, effective 30 days after today’s publication in the federal register, expands leasing provisions that make the right-of-way process for large infrastructure projects such as proposed transmission lines for wind or solar projects more transparent.
