The UK, like the US, has been famously resistant to renewables FITs. Instead it has opted for its Renewables Obligation (RO) model, which, as with the Renewable Portfolio Standards common to US states, favours large-scale installations.
The FIT was first sketched out in the UK’s Renewable Energy Strategy published in 2009, and has been delayed several times. The renewables industry has lobbied heavily in favour of the FIT, while larger energy utilities have attempted to water it down.
