Siemens, a founding member of the $700bn Desertec initiative that seeks to supply 15% of Europe’s electricity from North African solar and wind farms, says Australia's existing Solar Flagships programme lacks the ambition the country's solar resources deserve.

Siemens chief financial officer Joe Kaesar, who supports the "Austral-tec" idea, says solar-drenched areas such as the Sahara and Australia’s Great Victoria Desert should be viewed as “economic treasures”.
