Osaka-based Sharp reported a loss of 17.7bn yen ($196m) in the six-month period to 30 September, compared with a profit of 28bn yen during the same period last year.
Sales of solar cells fell 7.3% to 82.6bn yen, driven by the global slump in cell prices and the strengthening yen. The yen has gained 7.5% against the dollar in the last three months, meaning that overseas sales translate into less revenue once converted back into yen.
