For now the facility will have an annual production capacity of 160 megawatts (MW), compared to the 480MW Sharp originally touted before the financial crisis. The firm says it may still expand production to the originally envisaged level.
The first cells to roll off the production line in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, will be delivered to a local solar plant being built by Kansai Electric Power.
