"This is a move to increase cost-competitiveness so we can expand our presence in the US market," says Aaron Fowles, a spokesman for Sanyo North America.
Sanyo acquired the plant from Solec International and outfitted it in 2003 for production of its HIT (heterojunction with intrinsic thin-layer) modules. The 104mm-square wafers manufactured at the plant "are no longer in demand", Fowles says.
