By 2020, the US will have about 2.8GW of total microgrid capacity, a 127% cumulative capacity increase compared to this year.

The Boston-based consultancy forecasts in a report that renewables will account for 26% of microgrid capacity by 2020.

Distributed grid enhancements, switching and protection, project development, siting and permitting, and energy efficiency upgrades will make up the balance of microgrid project investment, as customers look to enhance reliability, reduce energy bills, and provide new grid services.
