REC Solar experienced solar cell and module inventory build-up in the first of quarter 2009, and the group says the subsidiary will cut second quarter production of solar cells and modules by close to 50%. Some 180 employees will be affected through terminations of temporary employment contracts, temporary lay-offs of permanent employees and rescheduled vacations.
REC Silicon, meanwhile, has halted production for an unspecified period at its new polysilicon plant in Moses Lake, Washington (Silicon III) for process safety reasons after it had been running for just ten days.
