The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission (PUC) voted 2-0 against the NextEra acquisition, citing a string of concerns over a proposed transaction that had drawn high-powered local opponents.
HEI’s shareholders and federal regulators had approved the takeover, but it hit a wall of opposition from figures including Hawaii’s governor David Ige.
Today in a joint statement NextEra and HEI announced the deal is off.
