Masdar also concedes that while the city will still be run on 100% renewable energy, it will not be possible to source all the electricity on site, contrary to its original boast.

Instead, “the purchase of renewable energy from off-site locations may also be utilised as energy demands increase over the project's lifetime," Masdar says.

In January Masdar, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi government, pushed the completion date back from 2016 to 2020, citing difficulties scaling up renewables technologies and an inability to attract tenants due to the financial downturn.

Masdar
