Masdar 'committed' to being a long-term PV manufacturer

Masdar PV is committed to becoming a major long-term player in the module manufacturing game, and may revisit its decision to scrap its planned factory in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in as little as a year, according to Masdar Power director Frank Wouters.

In early January Wouters publicly acknowledged that the group had downgraded its plans to build a €300m ($407.8m) module plant in Taweelah, between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, due to a lack of local demand.

Speculation has swirled about the future of Masdar PV since May 2010, when the firm unexpectedly removed its top two officials, chief executive Rainer Gegenwart and chief operating officer Joachim Nell, only six months after its €150m flagship thin-film factory near Erfurt, central Germany, commenced production.
