The German developer will finance, build and operate the 10.6MW PV and 6MW battery facility at Sandfire Resource 's DeGrussa copper mine, 900km northeast of Perth, Western Australia.
To save costs, the $40m plant will be integrated with a 20MW diesel-fired power station run by Kalgoorlie Power Systems, a subsidiary of Pacific Energy, which currently provides energy for the mine.
Sandfire managing director Karl Simich has described the project as "an Australian and a world first – a unique combination of an off-grid, high-capacity solar power array which will be fully integrated with an existing diesel power station".
