GCL-Poly ploughs $125.1m into controlling stake in Konca Solar

GCL-Poly Energy, China’s largest polysilicon maker, has agreed to buy a controlling stake in Chinese wafer maker Konca Solar Cell, as it looks to nail down as much of the solar supply chain as possible before moving more heavily into project development.

GCL-Poly will pay 854.1m yuan ($125.1m) for a 70.19% stake in the Jiangsu province-based Konca, which has an annual wafer production capacity of 300 megawatts (MW), and supplies cell maker such as Q-Cells and Sharp.

GCL-Poly, which has a polysilicon production capacity of 18,000 metric tonnes, has made establishing itself as a major wafer and ingot player one of its top strategic aims.
