First Solar shines as DOE closes $5.9bn in 11th-hour guarantees

The US Department of Energy (DOE) finalised seven deals under the Loan Guarantee Program late last week, supporting more than $5.9bn in debt to more than 2GW of solar projects and a large biorefinery.

The DOE Loan Programs Office had until midnight on Friday to finalise the few remaining projects to which it has issued conditional commitments.

As of late afternoon on Friday, global solar giant First Solar saw 780MW of projects that will be powered by its cadmium telluride thin film modules receive final guarantees from the government. They are the 550MW Desert Sunlight Solar Farm and the 230MW Antelope Valley (AV) Solar Ranch 1 project.
