The quarterly loss is the result of Evergreen’s decision to shutter its unprofitable factory in Devans, Massachusetts, and eclipses the $265.2m the company lost during the whole of 2009.
Evergreen says the average selling price of its wafers fell 6% since last quarter to $1.90 per watt, while its revenues rose 3.2% to $89.3m.
“The decision to close the Devens facility was the direct result of rapid and dramatic changes in the underlying market that have taken place since the facility first began operations,” says chief executive Michael El-Hillow, who took the reins after former chief Richard Feldt resigned unexpectedly last September.
