The Ukranian government wants to build up to 4GW of solar and other renewable sources in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, left uninhabitable by the 1986 accident.
Ukraine hopes the grid links in place for the nuclear stations could be used to export power from the exclusion zone, which stretches 30km around the stricken reactor.
The development bank said in a statement on its website: “As ecology minister Ostap Semerak said during a visit to the EBRD, some of the infrastructure at the former nuclear power station can be repurposed for solar power, and there's a ready supply of personnel skilled in electricity generation and distribution.
“The EBRD may consider participating in the project so long as there are viable investment proposals and all other environmental matters and risks can be addressed to the Bank’s satisfaction.”
UK newspaper The Guardian said it has seen Ukrainian government plans for a 1GW PV deployment on a 6,000 hectare site in the exclusion zone.
The plan has been shown to potential partners and investors, the newspaper claimed.
