The Riverside County Board of Supervisors last November unanimously approved an annual fee of $450 per acre ($182 per hectare) on solar projects larger than 20MW. The county has upwards of 20 utility-scale solar projects proposed in its sun-soaked eastern expanse that would cover 118,000 acres (477.5sq km).
"The Sun Tax not only discourages the development of solar energy projects in Riverside County – it does so by violating the California Constitution," says Shannon Eddy, executive director of the Large-Scale Solar Association (LSA), which brought the suit along with the Independent Energy Producers Association.
