Disused waterways, canals and rivers in cities around the world could be planted with nature-imitating giant solar ‘lily pads’ able to flow large volumes of electricity onto national grids if an innovative renewable variation on photovoltaic (PV) panel technology reaches commercialisation — as now looks likely — next year.
Solar Lilies are the invention of Glasgow, Scotland-based company ZW Architecture. They are made up of conventional mono-crystalline PV cells set within a steel frame and surrounded by a ring made up of curved segmental sections of recycled plastic.
