SunPower reached a deal last year under which NRG Energy subsidiary NRG Solar will own and finance the project, which is expected to cost $1.7bn. The guarantee would cover lenders if companies are unable to repay loans for the project.

PV manufacturer and project developer SunPower remains responsibile for its design, construction and initial operations and maintenance.
