US-headquartered First Solar has set the seal on a deal with EDP Renewables (EDPR) and ConnectGen covering the acquisition of a trio of in-construction PV projects with a total capacity of 278MW.

The solar farms, the 154MW Sun Streams 1 in Arizona, the 20MW Windhub A in California and the 103MW Sunshine Valley Nevada, are all slated to achieve “substantial completion” by the end of the fourth quarter.

“We’ve proven, once again, that investors are focused on the winning formula: responsible development, attractive project economics, and long-term power purchase agreements, underpinned by high-performance PV modules and a partner that stands behind its commitments,” said First Solar chief commercial officer Georges Antoun.

The three projects, which are being built using First Solar’s thin-film module technology, will be operated by First Solar Energy Services, which has with over 10GW of PV plant under management

EDPR North America CEO Miguel Prado said: “These projects reflect [our] focus on value creation, innovation, and sustainability. Combining responsible development with attractive economics backed by long-term Power Purchase Agreements, they are powered by one of the most innovative and eco-efficient solar technologies available today.”

ConnectGen CEO Caton Fenz added: “This deal furthers our goal to provide long-term, cost-effective, renewable energy solutions in the US. We look forward to working alongside EDPR and with all project stakeholders to responsibly bring these important projects to fruition.”

The US Solar Energy Industry Association’s latest national market report showed the contracted pipeline for utility-scale solar plant has mushroomed to almost 38GW this year, the highest in history, following procurement of 15GW in 2018.
